National Handloom Day 2026: Weaving History into a Classroom Contest

Events

Invertis University's Department of Fashion Design marked National Handloom Day this year with a mix of film and friendly competition, giving students a hands-on look at the craft traditions behind India's textiles.

The day opened with a documentary screening covering Khadi and a range of regional handlooms the ikat weaves of Pochampally, the silk and zari work of Kanjeevaram, and the golden Muga silk of Assam, among other textiles from across the country. The screening walked students through the techniques, history, and cultural significance behind each craft.

That was followed by "The Big Brain Battle: Handloom Edition," a quiz competition featuring five teams drawn from the second- and third-year batches. Teams were tested on their knowledge of Indian handlooms, weaving traditions, and the artisans who keep these crafts alive. The winning team Navjot Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur Dhillon, Jasakran Kaur, and Shrishti Singh took the top spot after a closely fought round.

Beyond the competition, the event gave students a chance to engage directly with India's weaving traditions while building teamwork and a deeper appreciation for the artisans behind the country's handloom heritage a reminder, for a design department, of where fabric and craftsmanship begin.
