The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organised an online guest lecture titled “Realism in the Cinema of Zaigham Imam,” offering students an opportunity to understand the creative choices, social themes and challenges behind filmmaking.

Filmmaker Zaigham Imam spoke about cinema as more than a medium of entertainment, highlighting its ability to influence society and communicate meaningful ideas. Drawing on his filmmaking experience, he discussed creative thinking, film production challenges and the determination required to pursue a career in the industry.

During the session, Imam encouraged students to remain persistent in working towards their goals and to approach filmmaking with a clear vision. He also discussed how a single story can be interpreted and presented in different ways, depending on the filmmaker’s perspective and storytelling choices.

The interactive discussion allowed students to raise questions about storytelling techniques, different roles in film production and the representation of social themes through cinema. The exchange helped participants consider how creative decisions shape a film’s narrative and influence the way audiences understand a story.

The lecture also highlighted the scope of cinema as a form of meaningful expression. For students of journalism and mass communication, the discussion offered insights into the relationship between storytelling, creative responsibility and the social impact of visual media.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Chancellor Dr. Umesh Gautam and Pro-Chancellor Mr. Parth Gautam. Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Dean; Dr. Lalit Kumar, Head of the Department; and faculty member Ms. Yashika Gupta attended the session alongside students. Dr. Nidhi Gupta coordinated the programme.

The guest lecture provided students with an opportunity to engage with a filmmaker’s perspective on realism, narrative choices and the challenges of bringing stories to the screen.
