Educational Visit to Bharwara Sewage Treatment Plant, Lucknow

The Department of Civil Engineering, Invertis University, Bareilly, organized an educational visit to Asia’s largest UASB-based Bharwara Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), Lucknow on 16th March 2026 under the guidance of Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. Umesh Gautam and Hon’ble Pro-Chancellor Mr. Parth Gautam. The visit was arranged to provide practical exposure to students of B.Tech. and Diploma Civil Engineering and to enhance their understanding of modern wastewater treatment and public health engineering systems.
Bharwara STP, having a treatment capacity of 345 MLD, is one of the largest sewage treatment facilities in Asia based on Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) technology, which is known for its energy-efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment process. The plant is implemented by Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam and operated by Suez India Pvt. Ltd., playing an important role in improving the water quality of the Gomti River and maintaining urban sanitation.
During the visit, students were briefed about plant operations by Plant Manager Mr. Parth Sarathinath, who explained various stages of treatment including screening, grit removal, sedimentation, UASB reactors, and sludge treatment units. Project Director Mr. Rajesh Mathpal and Cost Controller Mr. Akshat Saxena also interacted with students and shared insights on project management, safety measures, and cost optimization in large-scale infrastructure projects.
The visit was conducted under the leadership of Er. Awdhesh Kumar, Head of Department, and Dr. Payal Das, Assistant Professor, with the support of Prof. R.K. Shukla, Dean Engineering, who emphasized the importance of industrial exposure for developing practical knowledge among engineering students.
The visit proved to be highly informative and beneficial, helping students understand real-time sewage treatment processes, environmental sustainability, and the role of civil engineers in public health and urban infrastructure development.
