Dialectica 3.0: When Law Students Debated Ethics, Society and the Future

Events

The Department of Law wrapped up the third edition of its flagship debate series, Dialectica 3.0, this year built around the theme "Ethics, Society & The Future." What began as a straightforward competition unfolded across three rounds, each pulling participants into a different corner of law and public life.

The preliminary round asked debaters to weigh India's national interests against its role as a global leader. The quarter-finals moved to more everyday ground whether consumers should be free to choose between ethanol blended and conventional fuels. By the semi-finals, the debate had shifted into more contested territory: whether India's criminal laws need reform to better protect men's rights.

Prabhakar Singh (B.A. LL.B., 4th Year) and Mahaveer Singh (B.A. LL.B., 2nd Year) made it through to the final, where a sharp exchange of arguments, rebuttals, and cross-examination decided the outcome. Singh took the win; Mahaveer Singh finished as runner-up after a performance the judges Dr. Devraj Singh and Ms. Bushra Khanam rated just as strong.

A few students stood out for their showings in the earlier rounds too: Kirti Bhardwaj, Saudamini Trivedi, Nikhil Patel, and Raj Mishra were recognised for their reasoning and command of the subject.

The series was convened by Mr. Moiz, with Dr. Rashtra Bardhan as co-convener, under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Reena Jaiswal, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Dr. V. N. Sharma. Faculty members Prakhar Saxena, Alpika Verma, Himanshi Lakhmani, Deepak Kandpal, and Smriti Gupta supported the event throughout, alongside student volunteers Sarabgun Singh, Riddhi Bhardwaj, Vedanshi Upadhyay, Harsh Kashyap, Anshika Pathak, Vanshika Dixit, Sufia Parveen, and Divyanshi Rastogi, who kept the rounds running smoothly. The series continues under the guidance of the University's leadership Chancellor Dr. Umesh Gautam, Pro-Chancellor Mr. Parth Gautam, and Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Y.D.S. Arya.

More than a competition, Dialectica 3.0 gave students a reason to research, argue, and rethink their own positions under pressure the kind of practice that feeds directly into advocacy, litigation, and legal research down the line. As the department puts it: Question Today. Understand Tomorrow. Shape the Future.
