Intellectual Property Rights in Biotechnology: From Scientific Innovation to Legal Protection

The Department of Biotechnology organised a guest lecture on “Intellectual Property Rights in Biotechnology: From Scientific Innovation to Legal Protection” on 28 September 2026. The session was delivered by Mr. Prakhar Saxena, Assistant Professor, Department of Law.
The lecture introduced students to the role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in protecting scientific innovations, research findings and biotechnological inventions. It explored how legal protection helps safeguard original ideas and supports the development of scientific discoveries into practical applications.
Mr. Saxena discussed key forms of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights and trademarks, along with their relevance to biotechnology. The session highlighted the importance of understanding the legal framework surrounding research and innovation, particularly when scientific discoveries have potential applications in industry and society.
The lecture also helped students understand the connection between biotechnology, intellectual property law and the protection of innovative work. Through the discussion, students gained insights into how legal knowledge can complement scientific research and support responsible innovation.
The interactive session broadened students’ understanding of the legal considerations involved in biotechnology research and provided useful perspectives for their future academic and professional pursuits.
