Large scale buying and selling between or exchange of goods and services between two or more entities is called commerce. The term includes the activities, systems, procedures and institutions that are directly or indirectly involved in the exchange process.

Commerce forms the backbone of societies and its astute knowledge is required to steer businesses, government enterprises, governance norms, and the growth of countries. Commerce professionals provide interpretation to monetary terms, advise companies for planned investments and steer their growth in viable markets and for long term viability. Commerce interjects with personnel, organizational, legal, procedural, marketing, and brand building activities of any enterprise. The need for professionals with deep knowledge of Commerce is a consistent requirement of industry.

The three-year Bachelor of Commerce programme offered by the Department of Commerce is a professionally-oriented degree. It comprises of subjects such as Principles of Business Management, Bookkeeping and Accounting, Economics, Financial Accounting, Business Laws and Statistics, Business Environment, Corporate and Cost Accounting, Human Resource Management, Income Tax Laws, Public Finance, Research Methodology, Management Accounting, Indian Economy, management of Working Capital, Rural Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, and E-commerce.

The students undertake practical work and skill enhancement in areas of cyber crimes and laws, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, auditing, e-filing of returns, etc. They also analyse case studies, do role plays, do presentations and group projects. Viva voce and analytical based questions and answers form essential elements of course completion. Students also listen to invited commerce professionals, attend seminars and workshops and do research.

Understand the impact of the professional solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development of the companies as well as society as a whole.
