The teachers thus play a very important role in nation building. Therefore, it is imperative that the teachers be professionally qualified, and that they know the techniques for effective teaching.
The four-year Bachelor of Arts and B.Ed. integrated programme, offered by the Department of Education, has been put together to train students to become qualified and adept teachers. The course comprises a rich pool of subjects including English Literature, Political Theory, Micro Teaching, Childhood and Growing Up, Organization and Organs of Government, Macro Economics, Contemporary India and Education, Educational Technology, ICT in Education, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling, General studies, Vocational Education, Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Curriculum Development, Educational Measurement and Evolution, Pedagogy of English and Other Subjects, Inclusive Education, Gender, School and Society, and International Relations.
The programme requires students to learn the theoretical aspects and then undertake extensive internships and teaching drills in schools. They need to teach for a semester in a school attachment and submit reports and papers based on their experience. They also develop lesson plans, teaching schedules, test papers and viva voce questionnaires as part of this teaching practice.
