INTERNATIONAL GUEST LECTURE ON - IMPACT OF COVID ON SOVEREIGN DEBT WITH RESPECT TO INDIA AND AROUND THE WORLD ORGANISED BY B.COM DEPARTMENT ON 31st OCTOBER 2020

With a view to provide international exposure to the students, B.Com Department, Invertis University, UP organized an International Guest Lecture on “Impact of COVID on Sovereign Debt with respect to India and around the World” on 31st October, 2020 for the 2nd and 3rd year students of B.Com (H) in Financial Market. The lecture was delivered by Ms. Shweta Dutta Hooda (Operations Risk Manager, MDO Management Company, Luxembourg).

Ms. Shweta explains a sovereign debt crisis occurs when a country is unable to pay its bills. But this doesn't happen overnight—there are plenty of warning signs. It usually becomes a crisis when the country's leaders ignore these indicators for political reasons. Sovereign debt crisis effects GDP Growth, Budget Deficit etc. Drivers of Sovereign Debt Crisis are Primary Deficit, Interest Rates, GDP Growth Rate, Corruption & Scam, Over Promised Social Security and Exchange Rates.

Ms. Dutta also added that there are various sources of Sovereign Debt like private businesses, internal debt, International Monetary Organization and Institutional Investors. According to her, sovereign debt crisis is generally defined as economic and financial problems caused by the (perceived) inability of a country to pay its public debt.  This usually happens when a country reaches critical high debt levels and suffers from (perceived) low economic growth. The excessive levels of sovereign debt will slow economic growth to zero or below. Sovereign debt is government debt in a currency other than a government's own national currency.

During the lecture she also solves queries of students’ related to Sovereign Debts. The session was very interactive and productive.

We extend our deep gratitude to Ms. Shweta Dutta Hooda (Operations Risk Manager, MDO Management Company, Luxembourg) who made the students aware of the implications of COVID on Sovereign Debt throughout the World. The lecture was proved to be fruitful under the guidance of Prof. YDS Arya (Vice-Chancellor), Dr. Manish Gupta (Dean Management), Dr. Dheeraj Gandhi (HOD, B.Com), Ms. Shweta and Dr. Saurabh Kumar.
