Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry

Intake: 50

  • Programme CodeBSC-002
  • Duration 3 Years
  • Programme Graduate Programme
  • Department Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Chemistry is the study of substances, i.e. elements and compounds, and the scientific enquiry into the properties and behaviour of matter. It basically delves into the study of compounds that are made of atoms, molecules and ions; and their composition, structure and the changes they undergo during any reaction.

Chemistry has many branches such as biochemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry. In everyday life the study of chemistry can be applied to and understood by phenomenon like discolouration of leaves, food digestions, tears while we cut onions, and the chemical formula in creams. Chemistry has helped revolutionise the areas of medicine, pharmaceuticals, beauty products, agriculture and environment.

The three-year Bachelor of Science Chemistry (Honours) programme offered by the Department of Applied Science & Humanities combines diverse subjects such as Properties of Matter, Numerical and Statistics Techniques in Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Thermal Physics, Physical and Biochemistry, Chemistry lab work, and Applications of Computers in Chemistry lab work among others. The course has a compulsory and large element of lab-based work and research that helps students to get hands-on skills in this field.

The classroom instruction and lab work are complemented by workshops and group-based projects where students find real-life applications of Chemistry. They are also encouraged to read extra texts, case studies of companies that utilise chemistry principles, and some site visits to pharmaceutical and other companies are also incorporated in the syllabus.

Program Educational Objectives

This program acts as a specialized degree and helps to develop critical, analytical and problem solving skills at first level. This specialized degree makes the graduates employable in scientific organizations and also to assume expert administrative positions in various types of organizations. Further acquisition of higher level degrees will help the graduates to pursue a career in academics or scientific organizations as a researcher.

The Program Educational Objectives are to prepare the students to:

PEO-1

Work independently or in a team with engineering, medical, ICT professionals and scientists in scientific problem solving.

PEO-2

Act as expert administrators in public, private and government organizations or business administrators with further training and education.

PEO-3

Pursue masters and doctoral research degrees to work in colleges, universities as professors or as scientists in research establishments.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC OUTCOMES (PSOs)

After undergoing this programme, a student will be able to exhibit the following:

Proficiency in conceptualization of principles of theoretical Chemistry: (PSO-1)

Understand the basic concepts of organic, physical, inorganic, environmental computational and analytical chemistry. Able to correlate and integrate the core concepts of various branches in understanding the applied fields of chemistry, particularly Medicinal Chemistry and Polymers and develop proficiency in using tools and techniques related to Mathematics and Physics to solve physico-chemical problems.

Proficiency in conducting experiments and analyzing data: (PSO-2)

Elucidate and perform assays for the determination of organic and inorganic compounds using Classical and Modern analytical methods. Develop skills in the multistep-synthesis and characterization of specified organic and inorganic compounds using documented lab producers and extensive knowledge of separation and purification techniques. The evaluation, interpretation and synthesis of chemical information and data for proper documentation.
